WHEN MARTIN MEDICAL
CENTER
purchased the da Vinci
Surgical System in 2012, Evan Col-
lins, MD, OB-GYN and president of
the Martin Health Medical Execu-
tive Committee, was a strong pro-
ponent for the innovative surgical
tool. Dr. Collins had been trained
on the system in 2007 and knew it
would eventually become a stan-
dard for every hospital system.
“In 2007, there were only about
15 da Vinci robots in the state of
Florida,” Dr. Collins says. “But by
2012, there were already 100 robots
in use throughout the state.”
Martin Medical Center is now
home to the da Vinci Si robot
with Firefly technology – the most
advanced da Vinci Surgical System
available in Martin and St. Lucie
counties. Its enhanced high-
definition 3-D imaging provides
physicians with unparalleled preci-
sion, dexterity and control.
Powerful cancer treatment
The Firefly technology offers
integrated fluorescence imaging
capability that provides the surgeon
with real-time, image-guided
identification of key anatomical
landmarks using near-infrared
technology.

ogy differentiates cancerous tissue

hospital stays, and a faster return
to work and normal routines.
The system is used for a wide
range of surgeries, including gyne-
cologic and bariatric procedures.
To date, 11 Martin Health surgeons
have been trained and certified to
use da Vinci.
“For good reason, the da Vinci
has become a standard in hospitals
across the country,” Dr. Collins says.

Expert at the controls.
Evan Collins, MD, is seated at the da Vinci Surgical
System console during a surgery. The system features a magnified, 3-D, high-
definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate
far greater than the human wrist. The result is enhanced vision, precision,
dexterity and control for the surgeon.

from healthy tissue, allowing for
more accurate removal of the tumor
and potentially lowering the risk of
any cancer being left behind.
While the surgeon maintains
100 percent control, da Vinci es-
sentially translates his or her hand
movements into smaller, more pre-
cise movements of tiny instruments
inside the body.
“It takes time and commitment
to become proficient on the system,”
Dr. Collins says. “But once you do,
the advantages are very apparent.”
