6 MARTIN HEALTH SYSTEM MANY HEALTH CARE profes- sionals are called to their chosen career because of their caring nature and commitment to making each human interaction count. Abby Hindman is one of them. A nurse at Tradition Medical Center, Hindman was recognized with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for making a lasting impression on her patients’ lives. Dawn and Bret Becker nominated Hindman for the award. In April 2017, Bret was admitted to Martin Medical Center where he learned he had cancer in his lungs, liver and pancreas. As Bret’s diagno- sis worsened in the days that fol- lowed, Hindman became a calm and reassuring presence for the couple. “This completely rocked our world, and I can truly say that in the darkest hours of our existence, Abby Hindman demonstrated excellence, compassion and concern,” Dawn said. “The simple act of going above and beyond her job description left us feeling so grateful and privileged to have had her as our nurse, and someone we now consider a friend.” A perfect fit Hindman graduated from nursing school six years ago after getting married and starting a family. “Nursing seemed like a perfect fit for me,” she said. “It has exceeded my expectations. I love caring for my patients and getting to know them.” New friends. Bret and Dawn Becker nominated Abby Hindman, RN, for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for the warmth and compassion she provided to them. Thankful to our angel, an extraordinary nurse Hindman’s warmth and compas- sion made Bret feel he was her only patient. “Abby made sure we were com- fortable, answered any questions we had in regards to tests and results, and made sure my husband was getting his medicine exactly when he needed it,” Dawn said. “We never had to ring the nurse’s bell; she was always there to check on us.” Dawn was acutely aware that the hospital was full and all of the nurses had more than enough to deal with, which made Abby’s kind- ness, attentiveness and concern all the more remarkable. A blessing Bret’s cancer journey has continued, requiring additional hospital stays and many doctor visits. “Almost every nurse we have encountered at Martin Health has been phenomenal,” Dawn said. “They obviously love what they do. We can look at this terrible diagnosis and still see the blessing that has come from this journey. One of the biggest and most important blessings was our angel, Abby Hindman.” PATIENT EXPERIENCE
