14 CLEVELAND CLINIC MARTIN HEALTH FOUNDATION “IF YOU don’t have a good hos- pital, you can’t have good care,” said Maureen Zappala. “You have to maintain the hospital so that you and your family have access to good care when you need it.” For 23 years, Maureen and her husband, Frank, have been contrib- uting to Cleveland Clinic Martin Health in a variety of ways. They have made arrangements to include the hospital system in their estate plans, and both have served in leadership roles for the organi- zation. Frank has served on the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health Foundation Board of Directors and the foundation’s Advisory Board, and Maureen has served as chairperson of the annual Chrysanthemum Ball. “We are fortunate to be in the position we’re in, to be able to give our money away,” said Frank. “We feel that the hospital is one of the most important causes we can give to because it helps so many people.” Renewed energy and hope Maureen is all too aware of the value of a strong hospital system. The survivor of multiple strokes, she was recently treated for a potentially life-threatening condition. “We didn’t have any idea it was there,” Frank said. “She was hos- pitalized for an entirely different reason, and the doctors discovered this growth in her carotid artery that was slowly shutting off her blood supply.” Now on the road to recovery, Maureen is grateful for a renewed sense of energy and hope. Last fall, the Zappalas were honored at the Martin Health Foundation’s Legacy Society lun- cheon, along with other long-term donors. Through the philanthropic spirit and commitment of these donors—currently there are more than 125 Legacy Society members— the future of patient care at Martin Health is bright. “There are many promising proj- ects ahead, including a comprehen- sive neurosciences center,” Maureen said. “We are very excited about the future for Martin Health.” The future of patient care is bright Maureen and Frank Zappala are among the Legacy Society members helping to pave the way Maureen and Frank Zappala value high- quality health care and have been long-time supporters of Cleveland Clinic Martin Health.
